Student Conversation - Sarah Furlong

"My research takes me to different places, illustration, film etc. and these references help me when I go to make things. I like the idea of turning my ideas into animation as it quickens the narrative possibilities despite being such a slow process."

On discovery:

I started to cut paper by accident. I found some and just started experimenting. From working backwards in exploring fine art print I found the process very easy. The cheap materials I use are a great way of learning my process and the imperfect lines only adds to the narrative.

On drawing:

Originally I thought I would be a typographer but then I started to make drawings with a scalpel and realised I really enjoyed it. I also feel I think in layers and three dimensions. I then try to introduce a new narrative and transfer my ideas in two dimensional work.

On research:

My notebook is where I keep looking and collecting things. My research takes me to different places, illustration, film etc. and these references help me when I go to make things. I like the idea of turning my ideas into animation as it quickens the narrative possibilities despite being such a slow process.

On process:

But the scalpel is of course fundamental to my process of making. I can’t feel the tips of my fingers from holding it all day. I could stick a needle in my fingertip and not feel a thing.
